How to eliminate specific categories from a KB search

Sometimes a Knowledge Base search returns too many articles - and it quickly becomes clear that the articles in specific categories are not going to answer your question, so you'd rather eliminate those categories from your search.  Here's how to do it:

  1. Click on Advanced Search to open the Advanced Search window.  Depending on whether you're already searching, or reading an article that you've found, Advanced Search will look like one of the two clickable links below:

  2. In the Advanced Search box, Click and Hold/scroll (or click on the first category, and then scroll to the end of the list and use Shift Click to select the range) to select all the categories in the KB. 

  3. Uncheck the Search in Subcategories box.

  4. Finally, use Control Click to deselect the categories that you don't want to include in your search, making sure that you've deselected All Categories at the head of the list

    For example, you might want to search all categories except those containing BIND9 release notes:

The search categories selection should persist through all searches that you do from the same Advanced Search window, including following links to review articles that have been found, and then using your brower's back button to return to the search results page.

The search categories selection will not persist if you search again from an article that you have found, or click on Advanced Search.
